Huawei was the leading brand to source OLED panels for smartphones, with a 53.4% share followed by OPPO, vivo and Xiaomi which accounted for 18.6%, 14.8% and 8.3% respectively. Market shares in the 2H20, should change as Apple starts shipping the iPhone 12 and Samsung’s releases more new mid-range phones with OLED panels.
August saw overall phone shipments increase by 20.6% m/m but were still down 12.9% y/y, with only one month this year showing positive y/y phone shipment growth. Of those shipments, 95.2% were smartphones, a bit below this year’s average of 96.8%, and there were 45 new models released during the month, up 12.5% m/m/ and flat with last year. We track the number of new models released on a monthly basis (as seen below) as a data point concerning the heath of the Chinese smartphone market, particularly how this year will compare to last year’s September spike. We believe a drop in the number of new models released this year would be an indication that the overall health of the Chinese phone market has deteriorated further.
China saw 16.2m 5G smartphone shipments in August, up 16.5% sequentially. 5G shipment represented 60.1% of smartphone shipments, up 26.3% from the beginning of the year between 15.5m and 17.2m 5G shipments seems to be the steady-state level. If September sees a spike in new model releases, as it did last year, the test of 5G staying power would be for the 5G share to remain relatively constant especially with the relatively low priced 5G models available in China.
