China to Subsidize Its Local Semiconductor Industry w/$50b
The US Administration’s broad anti-China rhetoric is a sobering lesson for the Chinese government, which is unable to secure what are vital components that are not produced locally. Perhaps the $25b to $50b could be better spent expanding the US semiconductor R&D effort, rather than chasing a manufacturing share goal that will likely be impossible to reach. The objective should be to develop those products that are both difficult to produce and absolutely necessary for other key industries. The US might have been the volume leader in a number of industries that are now owned by other countries or regions, but the products themselves were developed here and without the technology behind them, even the high volume producers are be beholden to the US for each incremental improvement in the technology
