Changhong Undercuts 8K TV Pricing
May 04, 2020
Chinese TV brand Changhong introduced a new line of 8K TVs that not only provide 8K resolution but also contain 5G modules that will allow them to stream at 5G data rates where available. While Changhong does sell some rather expensive 8K TVs that range from ~$4,400 (55”) to $42,000 (75”) the new line, including the 5G option, is targeted to sell for between $571 (55”) and $1,225 (75”). The least expensive Samsung/LG (066570.KS)/Sony (SNE) 8K TVs at Best Buy were listed at $2,500 for a 55” Samsung 8K TV and $4,199 for a 75” Samsung 8K TV.
Making comparisons without most specs is difficult and leaves many factors open to speculation, although the panels were produced by BOE and the quality of components, scaling algorithms, and a multitude of other possible differences were not available but offering a 55” 8K TV set with 5G capabilities for $571 will certainly put some pressure on 8K TV pricing and other Chinese TV brands will likely follow. These TVs are slated for China and while all Chinese TV brands are looking to expand off the Mainland, don’t expect to see these heavily discounted sets hit the US market right away, and the quality will make a big difference as to their acceptance outside of China. Changhong is expected to adhere to this new pricing policy across their 8K TV product line, although BOE has limited production of 8K TV panels, other than 65”. A sizable order from Changhong or others could change that situation quickly. Troubled CEC Panda also produces small quantities of 8K 98” panels in China, but won’t be viable to compete with Changhong discounted 8K product for some time. LG’s 8K TV (88”) are also OLED, which would likely sell at a premium to LCD or QLED, and Samsung’s 8K TVs are QLED, which also garner a premium over standard LCD TVs, but selling a 55” 8K TV with 5G at a price that is only 23% of the lowest priced 55” 8K TV currently available, Chinese buyers could be more tolerant of technology and/or quality issues.
