Broadcom Suggests iPhone 12 Delays
June 14, 2020
Chipmaker Broadcom suggested a "major product cycle delay" in an earnings call with analysts and investors, which could affect Apple's plans for iPhone 12. Broadcom chief, Hock Tan, didn't refer to Apple directly but revealed the affected client is a "large North American mobile phone" customer. He also confirmed that Broadcom hardware was in the new iPhone. Given the knock on effects of the coronavirus pandemic to all parts of society, I think it's fair to say that they will continue to impact the second half of the year. Apple has kept launch and announcement momentum going, but the iPhone is a very different beast. The rumors state that the iPhone launch won't be the start of September as has normally been the case. Instead, it will be delayed until October, with the new iPhone following the same launch time as the iPhone X in 2017 (i.e. early November.) Counter to this conclusion was a report by DigiTimes that Apple will complete the second phase of its "EVT" or "Engineering Validation and Testing" stage for its upcoming iPhone 12 lineup at the end of June and begin production of the models in July. Whether the release is September or November it doesn’t make much difference unless your options run out in September.
