British Ban on Huawei’s 5G Technology Decided
July 19, 2020
The UK Government reversed its January decision and will phase out the use of Huawei equipment in the country's 5G network by 2027. It claims that "the UK can no longer be confident" about the security of future equipment from the Chinese vendor. Oliver Dowden, secretary of state for the UK Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport states that the decision "will delay 5G rollout by a cumulative two to three years". The decision will cost providers and the country billions - including UK mobile users, as bills will inevitably have to rise to help foot the bill. Operators having kit Huawei in their 5G networks will have to start again with new vendors. The ban doesn't include Huawei kit in the 2G, 3G or 4G networks, but the damage to the UK's 5G rollout is indisputable. 5G was having trouble finding its feet in the UK so the delay will allow the handset market to catch up.
