BOE OLED Fabs Not Qualified for Prime iPhone Panel Production
BOE is seeking to qualify as a primary Apple OLED supplier, along with Samsung Display and LG Display, however a review of the Mianyang fab’s production capabilities earlier this year were disappointing due to low yields, which could not Apple’s quality and quantitative standards. BOE’s small panel OLED business has been based in Mianyang G6 OLED fab, and more recently moved to Chengdu G6 OLED fab.
BOE hasn’t given up, and while it is able to supply small numbers of replacement displays for the iPhone 12, it requested that Apple evaluate production at the Chengdu fab to restart the qualification process in Q221 to be considered for initial production of the iPhone 13. Apple is expected to use LPTO technology on a portion (estimated at 50%) of the iPhone 13 line in 2021. Samsung is already producing LPTO displays, current used on the Note 10 and LG Display is in the process installing equipment to produce LTPO backplanes at its ‘dedicated’ Apple iPhone fab. LG already supplies LTPO panels for the Apple Watch Series 5 and 6. BOE is still developing the technology which could account for the low yields at their OLED fabs. BOE is trying to qualify its LTPS process in 2021 and then move to LTPO in 2022. From: SCMR, LLC
