BOE – In or Out?
May 31, 2020
There are mixed reports on BOE’s participation in Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 release. Some say BOE will be providing flexible OLED displays for the iPhone 12 Max, along with LG Display, while others say they will be providing replacement screens for those iPhone 12 family members that find themselves in need of a new display. While only BOE and Apple know the answer, in the past, when LG Display faced quality issues with its OLED displays it was relegated to the replacement screen venue, rather than being a direct supplier. Given that BOE has yet to supply flexible OLED displays to Apple’s iPhone line, replacement panels may also be the case for BOE, which will allow it to prove that it is able to match the quality and reliability without Apple taking on significant customer risk. It should be noted that AT&T repair contractors often use TFT LCDs to replace OLED panels. While BOE has made considerable strides in developing its flexible OLED display business, and supplies to a number of top brands in China, Huawei switched to Samsung Display’s foldable displays for the next iteration of its Mate Xs IP filings by Huawei also seem to indicate that it might switch from the ‘out-folding’ design it used, to an ‘in-folding’ design, similar to Samsung’s, a result of poor performance for the current Mate X.
