BOE Caps Roof on Micro OLED Fab
November 05, 2018

BOE has capped the roof of their latest production facility, a $215m JV with the Kunming government, Olightek, andKopin (formed early this year).  The facility, which will produce OLED microdisplays for AR/VR and is expected to open in early 2019 and when fully built out is expected to have a capacity of 1m units/year.  Olightek has been around since 2008 and has been producing micro-displays since 2011 on its own production line with a capability of 450,000 units/year and Kopin has significant micro-display manufacturing expertise in both LCoS (liquid crystal on Silicon) and OLED, and particular expertise in micro-display backplane design.  As the BOE facility will be producing displays on silicon, which is opaque, the OLED structure will have to be top emitting. Some of the toolmakers in the fab are:

  • ASML
  • Tokyo Electron
  • Picosun
  • Hirose
  • AP Systems
  • Air Liquide
