BOE Capacity Expansion Plan
December 08, 2019
BOE is planning on increasing its OLED production capacity by 350% in 2020 to 70m as demand rises. BOE has three 6th generation flexible AMOLED manufacturing plants. One is the Chengdu plant that has been in mass production since 2017; the second is the Mianyang plant that starting shipping this July while the third is the Chongqing plant that started construction last year (commission in 2020). The Chengdu factory’s AMOLED panels have been used in at least 10 smartphones, from brands; Huawei, OPPO and vivo.
BOE held its annual Innovation Partner Conference in Beijing, and the company's chairman said that the company aims to produce at least 70 million flexible AMOLED panels. This is a sharp increase from what BOE estimated only last month. BOE also said that as supply of LCD displays is outstripping demand, the company will not invest further in LCD production. The company is investing heavily in next-generation OLED technologies. A calculation of BOE capacity vs. announced production for 2020 of 6.5” flexible displays puts the (yield * utilization) level at ~42%.
