BOE Again Trims OLED Production Expectations for This Year
November 04, 2019 BOE, which supplies foldable OLEDs to Huawei, set expectations for shipping between 30m and 50m OLED panels this year, but found that by August, yields were so low, they lowered their forecast to 30m units. The company has now reset that forecast again to 20m units this year, but predicts they will ship 40m panels in 2020. South Korean OLED panel producers have sampled BOE OLED displays and are considering adding them to their supplier list for small panel product in the future. While BOE has the capacity to be a significant small panel OLED supplier, they are struggling to compete with Samsung Display in terms of quality, technology, yields and volume. BOE will end this year at a run rate of ~9.4m unit/month, primarily through its Gen 5.5 and Gen 6 fabs in Chengdu, Mianyang, and Ordos, giving them a ~2% share of the small panel OLED market. By the end of 2021 that share should increase to ~12%, By way of contrast, Samsung Display will exit 2021 with a 58% share of the small panel flexible OLED market. |
