Bidirectional OLED Microdisplays for Data Glasses Developed by Fraunhofer FEP
October 17, 2017 AR and VR data glasses are no longer limited to the gaming industry as they are being deployed in professional environments to assist designers, mechanics, surgeons, and first responders in their tasks. Data glasses can also be employed as a teaching medium in nearly all fields. Fraunhofer FEP has integrated its high-resolution OLED microdisplays in various demonstration samples, which were tested in many different scenarios, and further developed. In one implementation, researchers have modified a demonstration sample in such a way that it can be employed for AR as well as VR applications depending on whether a transparent or opaque visor is fitted to the data glasses. Different image content can be directed to each eye, creating a 3D effect for the user. The scientists used bidirectional microdisplays with a resolution of 800x600 pixels for this first demonstrator. Photodiodes were integrated on the chip besides the OLED pixels so as to record users' gaze for eye tracking. Figure 1: Fraunhofer LED Goggles Source: Company
