Apple to Use OLED Displays in Some iPad Models

Last week, we reported on the blooming effects inherent in the iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) mini-LED display. ETNews reports that Apple will make the jump to OLEDs with iPads coming out in 2022. Those will be the first Apple tablets not to use some kind of LCD (even mini-LED tech is LCD based). Samsung and LG are the likely suppliers of the OLED panels. Image quality, weight and design were reportedly the key considerations in the decision to move away from LCD.

Samsung Android tablets already use OLED displays, but Apple moves around 50 million iPads a year, so the panel makers may have to expand the capacity of their factories. Samsung Display has previously committed to a fab for mid-range panels for notebooks, so the iPad displays would fit right in. Apple will likely start off with a few models at first and add more as capacity expands. These things don’t happen overnight – if equipment is ordered this year, the factories would reach pilot production in 2022, and start production in 2023.
