Apple Settles on Samsung as iPhone 12 Panel Supplier w/Assist from LGD
May 24, 2020
SCMR, LLC reported that Apple placed orders for iPhone 12 displays with both Samsung Display and LG Display. Consistent with our prior reports, expect Samsung Display to produce both the 6.7” and the 5.4” displays with Y-OCTA, while they will share production of the 6.1” display, which will use an add-on touch system, with LG Display (LPL). Prior reports that BOE has been included in Apple’s display supplier roster, were questioned as BOE can’t match the flexible OLED specifications of SDC and LGD. Alternatively, brands often use other than original equipment for replacement displays or regional products. On May 19th,DSCC tweeted the following table.

DSCC backed away from the use of BOE panels saying, “Apple will continue to use long-time supplier Samsung for the 5.4-inch "iPhone 12," not BOE. BOE may be a supplier for a redesigned "iPhone 12s" for 2021. With orders being place now, in a typical environment, there should be ample time to meet Apple’s usual release schedule, which is the 2nd week in September, although difficulties with the iPhone X series display did cause a relatively short release delay for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max in 2018, which was Apple’s first foray into OLED displays. Separately, UBI Research reported that BOE was developing 5.4 inch and 6.1 inch OLEDs, but has not received any orders from Apple. From: SCMR, LLC and UBI Research
