Android creator Andy Rubin's consumer electronics startup Essential will shutter its operations, the company announced in a blog post. Essential said that it could see no way to deliver its latest product, a mobile handset named 'Project Gem,' to the market - so it decided to shut down the company entirely. Despite Rubin’s track record of developing Android, the open-source smartphone manufacturer which became a unicorn, a startup valued at more than $1 billion, in less than two years when it was acquired by Google, the Essential Phone, failed to gain traction with consumers and the company released only two products to the market since 2016: the Essential Phone and a cross-platform email app.
