Anand Tech Uncovers Processor Throttling by the OnePlus 9
For the third time in its short history, OnePlus finds itself embroiled in a controversy over the performance of its phones. AnandTech published a report that the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 throttle the capabilities of their Snapdragon 888 processors when running popular apps like Chrome, Twitter and WhatsApp. AnandTech wasn't able to provide a complete list of all the applications where the two phones limit their CPU output, but what's notable about the outlet's findings is that the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 don't throttle any benchmarking tools.
OnePlus wrote in a forum post on Monday, the processing power can often be “overkill” on certain Android apps, and they want to match each app with the most appropriate performance it needs”. OnePlus later explained it had been optimizing the CPU for popular Android apps to cut down on battery drain and overheating after receiving feedback from customers. Still, the vendor never told anyone about the CPU throttling. As a result, the whole episode has sparked questions over OnePlus's lack of transparency with consumers.
· Phones from Samsung and other OEMs offer the option to toggle between performance and battery-saving modes.
· On the OP9 Pro, this “optimization” was done in secret, and turning off all battery-saving options does nothing to change performance.
· If OnePlus is willing to cut corners here, who knows what else the company has skimped out on. The fact that OnePlus wasn’t forthright implies some kind of wrongdoing.
· The controversy also brings up a number of questions:
· Is Oxygen OS simply bloated and unoptimized? Who decides which apps are affected? Will OnePlus tweak performance in older devices.
· Also, if no one noticed until now, what does that say about the necessity of these high-powered devices in the first place? Aren’t budget or mid-range phones a much better buy? It isn’t the first time OnePlus has been in hot water for tipping the scales in benchmarks, although in the past it has always been to create more favorable numbers, not worse ones.
· The OnePlus 9 Pro has already been removed from Geekbench for software optimizations that the site views as cheating.
