An FPD Revenue Record in 2021 Followed by Four Years of Declining Revenue
Bob O’Brien announced an update to DSCC’s FPD Forecast Report, where the 2021 revenues are expected to reach a record high of $165B, of which OLEDs are $42B or 26% of the total, the remainder being LCDs, with a minor amount for electronic ink and Micro LEDs. In years, 2022 – 2025 the revenue will drop never reaching the 2021 peak, probably due to the end of the unusual large area LCD panel price increases at the end of 2021 and a return to annual price decreases. In 2021, TVs had the highest revenue share (~34%) with smartphones second at ~32%, followed by monitors at ~11%. By 2025, smartphones are expected to be the leader with a 38% share passing TVs.

Of OLEDs $60B in revenue in 2025, $48B will come from smartphone panels where OLEDs are expected to make up over 60% of shipment volume and more than 82% of the revenue. It should be noted that approximately 300m smartphones use a-Si TFT LCDs, selling for <$200 where the current price is $6-$8.
While the revenue is not forecast to grow, display area is expected to increase from 265m m2 in 2021 to 305m2 in 2025. The price per m2 drop dropping from $611 to $524 or -14% over the 4 year period. A very poor situation for panel makers, where the more they make, the less revenue they generate. The revenue loss seems to accrue only to LCDs.
DSCC also provided shipment volumes by quarter from 2018 thru 2021, for Automotive Monitors, Notebook PCs, Tablets and Mobile Phones. It should be noted that mobile phones include smartphones and feature phones, which are forecast to reach ~1.8b units in 2021.
