Dell to Release 55” OLED Gaming Monitor
January 20, 2019 Dell's 55-inch Alienware OLED monitor will feature 4K resolution and HDR10 support. Dell confirms that the monitor will be equipped with DisplayPort 1.4 as well as HDMI 2.1 that allows it to accept video inputs of up to 4K resolutions at 120 Hz. It also supports variable refresh rate (VRR) but it is not clear if it will support FreeSync, too. The company is considering Dolby Vision support. Dell's new OLED gaming monitor will enter a marketplace where two segments are starting to converge in some ways. HDMI 2.1 supports many of the features that gamers are requesting and even mainstream TVs such as the 2019 LG OLED models will support4K120 and VRR. Nvidia is planning to enter the segment with 65-inch gaming displays this year. At the same time, these large-size gaming displays can be seen as a reaction to the sad state of HDR in the PC monitor segment where industry players latch on to the watered-down DisplayHDR certification program. Dell will also start equipping some of its premium laptops with an OLED display this year. These too will support HDR. Dell expects to launch the 55-inch Alienware OLED monitor in the second half of the year. The company did not comment on pricing but it will have to be competitive if Dell wants to compete with TV manufacturers. With LGD starting to produce 48” displays using MMG, this application may be the perfect fit. If Dell and others can develop some momentum, the lower cost 48” monitor may find a home. |
