2021 Vehicle Display Shipments to Grow 17% Y/Y
Global vehicle shipments peaked in 2017 at 95m and then dropped from 2018 thru 2020, bottoming out at 75m. In 2021, shipments are projected to grow 87m somewhat limited by the component shortages and then grow to 92m in 2022 and 102m in 2025. Concurrent with the vehicle growth is the total number of displays, which had a small decline in 2020, -4% Y/Y to 110m. In 2021, displays are forecast to be up 13.6% to 125m and then continue growing to 175m by 2025 to parallel the vehicle growth although the number of displays/vehicle is expected to remain between 1.5 and 1.6. For OLED panel makers, shipment growth requires some improvement in luminance and a higher range for max temperature.

One additional trend that will affect the selection of displays is the adoption. By most vehicle makers of some type of operating system to provide a transparent interface with the home and the smartphone. The next chart shows the penetration of operating systems by number of vehicles.
