TCL Formally Commits to Gen 8.5 IJP OLED Fab
TCL’s “Guangzhou Key Construction Preparatory Project Plan in 2020” established a 46b yuan ($6.87b US) fund for a Gen 8.5 IJP OLED fab. While construction is not expected to start until next year, a bit under a half million US$ will be spent this year. Production is expected to begin in 2024. The general manager said “It’s progressing smoothly.  Details of the project, which is both and R&D center and a Gen 8 production line are still thin but TCL has made a $281m US investment in JOLED in June for a ~10% stake in the company, a license for the technology and began a 3 year project to develop ink-jet printing for OLED displays. TCL has been working with Tianma since 2016, as part of Juhua Printing, a JV between the two companies (66% ChinaStar and 34% Tianma) plus the support of the Guangzhou government and local universities, working on an open platform for OLED printing.
