Samsung’s QLED Outpace LG’s OLED TVs
May 31, 2020

The global OLED TV market is expected to post negative growth this year, compared with the QLED TV sector and LG is blaming it on COVID-19. But LG Display previously planned to have its OLED panel factory in Guangzhou, China, start mass production in the fourth quarter of 2019, before the pandemic and now won’t begin until Q320. TV shipments are expected to increase only 7.8 percent Y/Y to 3.375 million units according to WitsView, a research. The figure was a 26.1 percent decrease from its original number forecasted earlier this year. Both market LG Electronics and Sony have lowered their shipment targets for OLED TVs this year."

Samsung has taken advantage of the supply shortage and expects a sharp rise of QLED TVs, by rebranding and flexibly pricing of QLED products, to increase the reported volume of QLED sales. The global QLED TV shipment is expected to grow 41.8 percent Y/Y to reach 8.27 million units this year with aggressive sales promotions from Samsung. Although overall global TV shipment is expected to suffer 5.8 percent Y/Y decline to 205.21 million units this year, WitsView said QLED TV sales can increase further.

Promotions of Samsung Visual Display's older models in the first quarter of 2020, resulted in retail price cuts of more than 20 percent for 65-inch QLED TVs in the North American market, creating replacement demand for new TV sets," according to WitsView. Omdia said Samsung was the top TV vendor in Q120 accounting for 32.4 percent of the global TV market in terms of sales value. From: Yonhap
