Samsung Plans to Expand OLED Displays for Mid-Range Price Notebook PC
January 27, 2020

Samsung Display (SDC) is seeking opportunity to expand OLED display notebook PC business by producing mid-price range focused OLED panels this year.  SDC has been producing OLED displays for notebook PC application since 2016 by supplying OLED displays to HP Spectra and Lenovo X1 YOGA models.  The OLED display adaptation mainly occurring on high-end models, which are priced as high as $3000 range depends on how SSD and memory sizes are customized. The IHS reported that there were 165K notebook PC with OLED displays in 2019; however, the number will soon be reaching 770K units by 2023.  Late 2019, SDC announced its plan to focus on 13.3” FHD mid-range OLED notebook PC segment, including high-end 15.6” and 13.3” notebook PC panels with 4K resolution OLED notebook PC.  Early this year, HP, NEC and Samsung Electronics announced that the companies will be releasing new OLED notebook PCs in 2020, using SDC’s OLED Displays. The Spectra and the Lavie Series are integrating a 15.6” 4K OLED display targeting a high-end price range; however, Samsung’s Chrome will feature a 13.3” OLED 4K touchscreen and is powered by Intel Core i5 chipset, Wi-Fi6 support, fingerprint sensor and a stylus pen at $1000 range. The Best Buy pricing indicates that 13.3” display notebook PCs are ranging from as low as $400 to as high as $1400, varies by each model’s hardware specs. Still $1000 range of OLED Chromebook could be a bit challenging for buyers to purchase whereas Samsung’s Chromebook needs to either compete with other Chromebook at lower price or the close price-range notebook PC with better specifications and functionality. We will keep track on mid-range OLED notebook PCs in 2020. It will be interesting to see how the notebook PC application get adapted to brands as it did on smartphone brands.  We expect to see more mid-range smartphone will install OLED displays in 2020 as to differentiate and to increase profitability and SDC expects that the similar trend will be practiced on notebook PC as well. The growth of OLED notebook PC segment will likely to increase utilization on rigid OLED capacity whereas its smartphone demands slow down.
