Samsung Patents Foldable Smartphone with Rollers
March 26, 2018

Samsung Display filed a US patent last week that takes the idea of a foldable smartphone one level further, but it looks like they copied the idea from 2016, which we highlighted at the OLED Summit.

Samsung takes this idea one step further, and not only folds out from the hinge on one side, but does the same on the other side, which now triples the size of the device to 5.22” x 7.62” or 39.69 in2, only a bit under the surface area of Samsung’s massive 9.7” tablet.  Of course, this patent application is among the many that Samsung Display and others file each year to protect themselves if someone is able to manufacture such a devices, but by no means indicates that Samsung has developed such a commercial product, although we are sure that they are working on it.  Somewhere down the road, this concept will seem natural and simplistic, but for the time being we will have to be satisfied with smartphones whose displays just wrap around the sides a bit.
