Rise in ASPs Cause Display Makers to Slow Closing of LCD Fabs

Samsung Display planned to shut down its L8 LCD fab in Asan at the end of this year, however, with the increase in demand from COVID-19 and the concomitant rise in panel prices, management paused the shutdown.  Now the date is March 31, 2021.  Samsung is continuing negotiations with potential equipment buyers, with a final decision to be made in February. Samsung sold its LCD fab in Suzhou, China to ChinaStar, and both Gen 7 and Gen 8 equipment to Shenzhen Efonlong Optronics as China continues to be ripe with buyers looking to either expand their module business, like Efonlong, or buy production equipment from Samsung.
