PlayNitride Needs to Reduce MicroLED Costs by a Factor of 20 to be Competitive

PlayNitride claims to have improved the uniformity of 6-inch micro LED epitaxial wafers, with yield rates higher than those for LED epitaxial wafers. PlayNitride chairman and CEO Charles Li said. While yields of >99.99% are necessary for volume production of micro LED chips, such high rates are practically difficult to reach, Li noted. Therefore, PlayNitride has adopted a mass-repair method for improving yield rate, Li indicated.  Micro LED display production hinges on two key factors: the chips should be very small in size and characterized by consistent and excellent optical performance; and production must be cost- and time-efficient, Li explained. PlayNitride’s PixeLED Matrix, uses 16 RGB micro LED sets on a PCB substrate, equivalent to a display unit consisting of 48 micro LED chips, Li said. By virtue of PixeLED Matrix, PlayNitride aims to reduce production cost to one twentieth of the current levels in five years, Li noted.

Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories (ERSO) is developing 5-micron micro LED chips and plans to use them to develop micro LED displays with a pitch of 12.8 microns for use in AR devices in the first quarter of 2021.
