Pixel 4a—Some Like It

Android Authority calls the Pixel 4a one of the best experiences on Android, for one-third the price of flagships with the camera as a real winning element. The Pixel 4a matches up with the Apple iPhone SE, the only real competition in the US. At $349, that’s a $50 difference, but that’s not enough to make people switch ecosystems. Most iPhone SE buyers look at the SE as a way to reduce an iPhone investment while maintaining the seamless integration with their watch, iPad and Mac.
  • Google’s going with a super tidy more-Google-than-Android experience, and the camera, but the hardware is at least a year old.
  • In the ROW, the 4a trails the OnePlus Nord, and Xiaomi Poco F2 Pro, both of which are a little more expensive and have better processors, 5G support, faster refresh rate displays. I flagship performance at a mid-range price is desired
  • None match the Pixel 4a camera and the Pixel 4a will get to Android 13 and likely 14, which beats out the updates we normally see from other Android makers.
  • Google replaced the flexible OLED with a rigid OLED display to get some costs out.  Given that the rigid and flexible OLED have the same performance and since most smartphones don’t really take advantage of the flexible form factor, we wonder why most don’t take advantage of the cost savings.

The perplexing thing is that Google also revealed the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5, yesterday, including the above.
  • “This fall, we’ll have two more devices to talk about: the Pixel 4a (5G), starting at $499, and Pixel 5, both with 5G...”
  • “Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 will be available in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan and Australia.” Google did confirm India isn’t in its plans for its 5G phones.
  • The $499 is a $150 jump and it will have bigger display, 5G support and perhaps a bigger battery and a second camera lens.
