Nintendo Announces 7-Inch OLED Switch Launching Oct. 8

Nintendo announced a new model complete with an OLED display set to launch on Oct. 8. The new model sports a 7-inch OLED display, a wide adjustable stand, and a dock with wired LAN port. Nintendo increased the internal storage to 64GB and is promising enhanced audio through the onboard speakers. It will continue to offer detachable Joy-Cons and support the three play modes: TV Mode, Tabletop Mode, and Handheld Mode. The existing Switch is $300 whereas the OLED model is set to be $350, but in return for that extra $50 there’s a larger portable screen, better audio, double the storage, and at least the same nine-hour battery life of the existing model. The one feature supported is 4K output to a TV, which still leaves room for a Switch Pro model to appear in the future.

Nintendo New Features
  • New 7-inch OLED screen with reduced bevel, better contrast, and more vibrant colors.
·       Wider kickstand that adjusts to different viewing angles.
·       LAN port added to dock for improved online play.
·       Internal storage bumped up to 64GB (from 32GB).
·       Slightly improved speakers.
·       Now comes in a new white colorway.

Nintendo Unchanged
·       No improvements on internals. It features the same chipset, RAM, and battery life as the standard Switch.
·       No improved resolution. The OLED panel is still 720p, meaning reduced sharpness due to lower PPI (294 to 210 ppi). The lower ppi for a game display is likely to be less noticeable than for a laptop, where straight lines and color shift are more noticeable.
·       No 4K output. Docked play still maxes out at 1080p.
·       No Bluetooth audio. You’ll still need to buy a dongle.
·       No upgraded Joy-Cons. Expect drifting over time.
