Lifetime and Luminance Improvements Required for OLEDs to Get Wide Acceptance in Vehicle Displays

Prof. Dr.Karlheinz Blankenbach, Honorary President, DFF talked about automotive displays at the 2021 OLED Summit. He concludes that OLEDs are the best automotive display technology, due to:
  • Image Quality
  • Perfect Black
  • Fast Response Time
  • Flexibility (low R)
But he pointed to significant challenges, if OLEDs are to be adopted throughout the automotive industry, including increased lifetime and meeting the environmental specs.

DFF does extensive testing of displays for the auto industry against a number of spec, one of which is shown in the next figure in which OLEDs don’t meet the luminance of lifetime requirements

The next figure shows a lifetime test, where OLEDs drop to 90% of initial luminance after 1716 hours starting at 415 nits @+650 C, which is well below the material specs, indicating the impact of higher temperatures. At +850 C, there the luminance drops to 80% in 1,000 hrs.

OLED viewing angles have always been better than LCDs and the next figure shows the quantification of the differences, which are critical for dashboard viewing.
