LGD’s Aggressively Targets Transportation Market w/OLEDs
January 27, 2020

As we reported on CES, LG Display is targeting multinational automotive manufacturers and has started producing the industry’s first automotive flexible OLED displays. Its OLED display will be used for Cadillac’s Escalade to be introduced in the Q2 2019. Mercedes-Benz also decided to use LG Display’s OLED display for one of its latest models. Automotive manufacturers have been using LCD for automotive displays, but LG Display has been conducting R&D along with multinational automotive manufacturers for many years to develop automotive flexible OLED panel. We witnessed the excitement of the GM group, OnStar, on the opportunities to incorporate LG’s OLEDs in their automobiles.  LG Display’s automotive OLED panel provides a QHD (2560x1440) resolution. It can be used for a dashboard to provide a clearer screen for drivers. Compared to current LCD panels, it has far better contrast range, faster response speed, and wider viewing angle.

LG Display optimized its design by applying its own algorithms and differentiated design methods. Curved screen with a radius of curvature of 1750R at the maximum improves concentration level and immersion level of a driver. Its display also prevents reflection of a light from outside and reflection of a display screen of a car onto a front window through a special film. LG Display hopes  to increase the percentage of sales of OLED panels within its automotive display business continuously by producing flexible OLED panels.

LG also showed prototypes of a new first class cabin for Boeing. LG Display’s sales to into transportation in 2019 represented 20% of their entire market share, which surpassed the previous leader, JDI. ns for supplying automotive pOLED panels, its representative stated that the company cannot disclose any information regarding its customers. From: Staff Reporter Yoon, Heeseok | pioneer@etnews.com
