LG Display Exhibited OLED Lightings at the CITE 2018
April 16, 2018

LG Display (LPL) is expected to show a number of OLED lighting products along with its OLED TV models at an upcoming trade show in China, where for the first time the OLED lighting line will be shown alongside the OLED display products. LGD purchased the OLED lighting business from LG Chem in 2015 for $135m.   The trade show, which is held in Shenzhen, is the largest IT and electronics exhibition in Asia and is sponsored by both the Chinese Ministry of Communications and the local Shenzhen government.  It draws ~160,000 visitors each year.  While LG Display will be featuring their 88” 8K OLED display and their 77” wallpaper TV, they will also show OLED lighting products. Despite strong showings by OLEDWorks, LG is really the last hope the industry has to achieve volume production of OLED lighting.  If LGD cannot demonstrate a successful business, it is unlikely that any other major lighting company would want to engage in the production of OLED lighting. LGD’s Luflex brand is based on a 5 layer OLED stack that is produced at LGD’s G1 OLED lighting factory.  Fully built-out the fab will have a raw capacity of 30,000 sheets/month at Gen 5 (1000x1200) with both rigid and flexible capabilities, ranging from 4” squares to 4” x 12” strips (rigid, and from 2” x 8” flexible strips to 12” flexible squares.  While the cost remains high relative to LEDs, production at LG and OLEDWorks and innovation in batch level manufacturing are expected to bring the cost down over the next 2-3 years.  However, LGD is late to the table, having promised to achieve 90lm/W in 2015 as well as a $5 cost for a 4”x4” panel, when the Gen 5 reached 80% yields.  None of these targets have been reached and panels produced by LG currently underperform those produced by OLEDWorks Gen 2.5 fab.
