JOLED Gets US$400m, Needs Another US$500m for Gen 5.5 IJP Fab
July 16, 2018

JOLED has received about 400m dollars at the end of June. The sources say among the 4 investors, leading auto parts maker Denso invested about US$270m, trading house Toyota Tsusho put in about US$90 m, Sumitomo Chemical and SCREEN Holdings added the rest.  JOLED still needs to raise an additional US$500m to totally find its Gen 5.5 IJP OLED fab expected to have a capacity of 20,000 substrates/month The company plans to invest the new funds in its production base in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan. With the increase in capital, shares held by the state-backed fund fell below a majority. JOLED’s business plan appears to target medium size notebooks, tablets and notebooks and will avoid competition (at least initially) with the Korean’s and Chinese, where the concentration is on smartphone size displays and large TVs panels.  JOLED said that the pixel density could be as high as 400 ppi, but so far they have only demonstrated 200 ppi, still a significant achievement.
