Japan’ Olympics Expected to Drive 8K Sales
There is no shortage of forecasts that paint a rosy picture for 8K TV driven by the upcoming Tokyo Olympics as the seminal 8K event, with NHK, Japan’s viewer-owned national broadcasting source, broadcasting seven events and the opening  and closing ceremonies in 8K, although questions remain as to whether the COVID-19 will force a postponement of the event.  To enjoy true 8K  requires an 8KTV, which also provides a few hours of Sumo wrestling and other Japanese Sports events which are broadcast on the same channel. Aside from the satellite dish, 8K sets are expensive and forecasts for 8K shipments vary widely.

Global shipments of 8K TVs are expected to surge to two million units in 2020 from 430,000 units shipped a year earlier, driven by improving cost structure and 5G environments, as well as TV brands' campaign efforts, according to industry observers. Currently there are 8K QLED TVs available from Samsung Electronics and TCL, 8K LCD models from Sharp, 8K OLED TVs from LG Electronics, as well as 8K LED ones from Sony. Global 8K TV panel shipments could reach 9.5 million units in 2022 and account for a 3.6% penetration rate.

Having started shipping 75- and 85-inch 8K TV panels in 2019, AUO has said it plans to enrich its portfolios by adding 65-inch models into its 8K lineup in 2020.
Innolux is shipping mainly 65- and 85-inch 8K TV panels currently and boasts the capability to ramp up the size to 120-inch. The company is also expected to see its shipments of 8K LCMs and entire 8K TV sets experience explosive growth in 2020-2021, estimated the observers.
