Huawei Takes #1 Position in April’s Global Smartphone Shipments
June 21, 2020

Counterpoint reports that Huawei not only stayed ahead of Apple but also overtook Samsung to become the world’s largest smartphone marker in April. The timing of this news, coming just after the U.S. tightened its restrictions on Huawei’s supply chain is ironic as this is the first time Huawei reached the top spot. Huawei was the world’s number one smartphone maker with a 19% market share,” followed by Samsung at 17%. Almost concurrent with the announcement, Samsung said it would find itself mired in the US-China trade war if it lent Huawei a helping hand, and would be an unlikely foundry partner of Huawei to support the Chinese vendor's "de-Americanization" of its supply chain in the wake of the US trade sanctions.
