Competition Heats Up for the Next Generation of IJPs

With the exit of Kateeva in the IJP of RGB sub-pixels, there have been recent trade press articles citing the increased competition in the ink-jet printing market from Toray Engineering, Tokyo Electron, SEMES and Panasonic as potential replacements for Kateeva’s encapsulation printing leadership.  Panasonic’s tool is used by JOLED both for JOLED’s production and as a JV with Screen Holdings to expand the size of Panasonic’s  IJP equipment.  Juhua Printing, a JV between ChinaStar (66%) and Tianma (34%), was formed in 2016 to develop ink-jet technology that prints both quantum dots and OLED materials and has shown prototype displays, based on Panasonic IJP, but thus far has only been used to produce display demos.  BOE has been testing Toray’s IJP equipment for both Gen 6 and Gen 8.5. LG Display has been using equipment from Tokyo Electron as has AU Optronics in R&D environments.
