Apple to Use Touch Integrated Panels (Y-octa) in 2021 iPhones
July 26, 2020

Touch integrated OLED panels are gaining widespread use within the global smartphone display industry, Etnewsreported that Apple placed orders for touch integrated OLED displays with Samsung for the 2021 iPhone series. While traditional OLEDs attach a touch sensor film on the panel, the integrated variant has a touch sensor built into the panel itself, so a separate layer is not required. Thus, touch integrated displays are thinner and less expensive than the conventional variants. So far, Apple has been using the traditional displays that have touch film attached to them, although that will change with the launch of the upcoming iPhone 12 series. The use of Y-Octa creates an issue for Samsung’s competitors that must now develop the technology to receive orders from Apple. However, LGD’s CFO said at the earnings review that they are already supplying TOE products to some customers and the ELEC reported BOE is supplying on-cell OED panels, in which the touch sensor is embedded within the panel, to Huawei. Sources revealed the different sizes as well, including a 5.4 inch, 6.1 inch, and 6.7 inch panels for the iPhone 12 lineup.
