What is in a Note 10?
October 22, 2018

Now that the new iPhones have been announced, attention is shifting to Samsung’s Galaxy Note series, the Note 10 (code name “Da Vinci”).  The Note 9 had a 6.4” but there are reports that the Note 10 will be 6.6”, a 3.1% increase on the diagonal and a 6.3% increase in area.  As the display size increases, the use of the smartphone to watch TV or movies or to read books becomes more attractive. However, the phone still has to fit in a pocket, which according to the clothing industry, is ~5”. Perhaps the size restriction will bode well for the foldable devices.

The leader in the battle for large phone supremacy is Huawei, which has 8 of 20 largest smartphones and when looking those released this year, takes Huawei has 6 of the top 12.  OLEDs are used in 7 of the top 20 smartphones by size. Huawei, which is seeking to become the #1 smartphone supplier also leads in the camera race, although LG Electronics recently outstepped Huawei with a five camera smartphone, but one can get an understanding of Huawei’s determination to become a leading force in the smartphone world from the fact that they seem to be ‘feature leader’, a position formerly held by Apple and Samsung.
