Samsung Makes Multiple Fixes to the Fold – Now What
August 05, 2019

Last week, Samsung we reported that Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold would ship in September, although no exact date was given. Samsung said it took the extra five months to optimize more apps and services for the foldable UX. And of course, the company changed the device’s design and construction:

  • The top protective layer of the Infinity Flex Display now extends beyond the bezel, making it more apparent that it is an integral part of the display structure and not meant to be removed.
  • The top and bottom of the hinge area are now stronger, thanks to added protection caps.
  • The Infinity Flex Display now has additional metal layers underneath to reinforce the protection of the display.
  • The space between the hinge and body of Galaxy Fold has been reduced.

The initial failure of foldable smartphones should in no way be an indictment of the potential of flexible screen technology. “Airline manufacturers are very interested, because it reduces 2-4 kilograms per seat out of the weight of a plane. On a large plane, that could be several tons of extra cargo weight available. It doesn’t seem like much, but it all adds up over the 20-30 year life of a plane.” Here are some ideas from the so-called analytical geniuses.

  • “Since you can bend it, why not do curved surfaces? Mugs with live visuals on? Kitchen surfaces that curve? New in-car surfaces. Wrist bands. Active watch straps. Mesh it into clothing.”
  • “Foldable screen technology could be just as game-changing as 5G, opening the doors to a whole new era of technology that will be lighter, bendier, and a whole lot easier and more fun to use.”

Greece's Techmaniacs website, and if the information is all Greek to you, PhoneArena has put together a helpful translation. The specs, which Techmaniacs says come from a trusted source, reiterate a lot of what we've already heard about the Note 10 while providing some conflicting claims about previously reported-on features. But the report fills in some missing details as well.

For starters, expect a more capable front camera on the Note 10. Techmaniacs claims "we'll see night mode reaching the front camera," which presumably means the Bright Night mode Samsung introduced to the Galaxy S10. That front camera will move to the center of the Note 10's display, confirming earlier reports that the upcoming phablet will feature a new Infinity-O panel.
