Huawei to Release Foldable Phone in 2019

October 29, 2018

Huawei’s CEO of consumer business, Richard Yu, told Digital Trends they are working on 5G foldable phones for release next year sporting large OLED displays.  Yu hinted that the upcoming product would arrive next year when US carriers begin rolling out mobile 5Gnetworks across the country. He also suggested that the company's foldable handsets would have a large screen size. "Before the foldable phones, we are introducing the Huawei Mate 20 X," he said. The Mate 20 X, which is now on sale, sports a 7.2-inch display, which will make it hard to fit in your pocket. A foldable phone, however, would solve that problem by letting the screen bend like a wallet. Yu revealed Huawei's foldable phone plans as rival Samsung works to unveil its own product, possibly as soon as next month. Arimasa Naitoh, considered as the father of the Lenovo ThinkPad, is most interested in the concept of a folding portable laptop. As we have reported, several OLED suppliers are working on foldable OLED screens that should hit the market in early 2019. At the laptop level, Naitoh-san envisioned a foldable device that could slip in a pocket.  The software already existing to turn a smartphone into a notebook and foldable displays are expected to reach over 7”, so a pocket notebook is not far away.
