Samsung Regains Lead in Volatile India Smartphone Market
July 22, 2019

The Indian Smartphone market is evolving rapidly, and while it has particular characteristics that make it unusual for smartphone brands, from a competitive standpoint it is business as usual, with the top 10 brands garnering just over 86% of the market, up from ~82% at the same time last year.  Big winners are Chinese brands and South African brand, Mobicel, while pretty much all other top brands have lost share.  At 10% shipment growth in 2018, it was the fastest growing market during a weak smartphone market overall, which has led to increased competition from Chinese brands looking to establish new growth markets.  Given that US smartphone shipments declined ~4% last year, almost all brands will be focusing on the Indian market this year.  With over 47 brands vying for attention in the Indian market, gaining share will come at the expense of marginal brands.  31 of the 47 brands in India have share below 1%.
