Flexible OLEDs to Outsell Rigid OLEDs by Q317 on a Revenue Basis
March 27, 2017 Flexible OLED displays are forecast to reach US$3.2b by Q317 edging ahead of rigid OLEDs at US$3.0b, with the flexible market growing over 150% in 2017 according to IHS. Flexible displays are typically 25% to 30% more expensive than the same size rigid displays due to the lower yields, the more expensive polyimide backplanes and the use of thin film encapsulation. The volume will be driven by the adoption of OLED flexible displays by Apple and the use of flexible displays by Samsung in both the Galaxy S8 and S8+. IHS expects costs for flexible OLED displays to drop below those of rigid displays as yields improve over time, but sees the higher current cost of flexible displays presenting a challenge to some smartphone brands. We don’t agree with IHS in that even if the yields were comparable, the component costs and the capex for flexible displays will still be higher than for rigid. |
